Skills Absolutely Necessary For a Paralegal Career
If you are a people person and like solving problems, but do not know what career you should strive for, perhaps becoming a paralegal is the right course for you. Not only do they get to work with lawyers, judges, corporate business owners, and countless other interesting people, they get to work with everyday Americans who need their help as much as a huge corporation. This is a career which can be as satisfying as any other career, but one must have the right skills for the job.
It is important to have excellent communication skills. You do not have to empathize with everyone who comes through the law office's door, especially the person wanting representation for a DUI they are charged with that took the lives of 4 people, but you cannot be judgmental. You need to be able to listen to their side of the story without prejudice and be able to relate to them what they will need to accomplish for a trial.
Organizational skills are a must for this career. You will be working on several cases at once, so mixing up the information of a case involving an adoption and a separate case involving a murder would be a bad thing. The adoptive parents may never get another chance to change a child's life that needs it, and the murder may end up going free because you were not organized. Remember, color coding files and sticky notes are not just techniques that teachers use for their students files, so use it for your case files. It will make your life a lot easier.
You will need to have good investigational skills because you will be digging into people's lives, whether they want you to or not. Be detail oriented when investigating so that way, you know you have all the information you could find and there are no surprises during the testimony. As a paralegal, you will be speaking to hundreds of people, so being a well-spoken, polite, intelligent person will come in handy. Never use slang, even if the person you are speaking with does, and always remember that you are representing a law office, so conduct yourself accordingly.
Lawyers will be dependent upon you, so make certain you show them that you are reliable, resourceful, and that you work as hard, if not harder, than they do. It also helps if you have a good memory, especially if you notice something during an initial investigation, but do not know what it means until later in the case, so try to remember everything and take detailed notes.
To get the educational skills that you will need as a paralegal, you must go to college. Remember that the paralegals with the best university education in their background will most likely get the best paralegal jobs in a law firm, thus earn a higher salary than every other paralegal. Remember that if you have the best references and qualifications, you will get the better jobs and work on the more prestigious cases.
